Hungary is threatening to block the EU's renewal of sanctions against around 2,000 Russian oligarchs if Mikhail Fridman is not removed from the list of people being sanctioned. This is reported by the Financial Times.

Saturday night, sanctions against Russian politicians and businessmen will expire if all 27 EU countries cannot agree to extend the sanctions for another six months. The people on the list are believed to have supported Russia's war against Ukraine. The people on the list are banned from entering the EU and their assets have been frozen.

According to the Financial Times, Hungary had initially wanted eight names removed from the list. Among them were Alisher Usmanov and Petr Aven. Now it is reported that it is willing to keep the names on the list as long as Mikhail Fridman is removed. Mikhail Fridman is a co-founder of Alfa Bank, the largest non-state-owned bank in Russia.
