
US President Donald Trump will impose a 50 percent tariff on steel and aluminum imports from Canada. Donald Trump wrote on his social media account Truth Social. The US president will thus double the tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada.
Trump writes that he has asked his commerce secretary to impose the additional tariffs, which will take effect as early as Wednesday, March 12. The announcement comes in response to the province of Ontario in Canada imposing a 25 percent tariff on electricity coming from the United States, Reuters reports.
The US president writes that he will "soon declare a national emergency" regarding electricity in the affected area. He also threatens to increase tariffs "significantly" on cars coming to the United States on April 2, "if other harsh, long-standing tariffs are not also removed by Canada".
Donald Trump announced in February that he would impose a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum from all countries. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect on Wednesday, March 12.
The largest share of steel imported into the United States comes from Canada, Mexico and Brazil, according to data from the U.S. government and the American Steel Association, AISI.
