US President Donald Trump is threatening India with higher tariffs after buying Russian oil. The president wrote this in a post on his social media site Truth Social.

- India not only buys huge amounts of Russian oil - they then sell a large part of the oil on the open market at a huge profit, Trump wrote, adding:

- They don't care how many people in Ukraine are killed by the Russian war machine. Because of this, I will significantly increase the tariffs that India pays to the United States.

However, the president did not write in the post when the increased tariffs would take effect or how high the increase would be.

Last week, Trump also announced in a post on Truth Social that he would impose a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from India. In the same post, Trump suggested that India would be subject to additional tough sanctions for buying Russian weapons and oil - without specifying further.

On Friday, Trump said during a press conference that he had heard that India would no longer buy oil from Russia. The next day, however, two unnamed Indian government sources emphasized to Reuters that there would be no immediate changes and that India would continue to buy oil from Russia despite threats of sanctions from the United States.

- These are long-term oil contracts. It's not that simple to just stop buying it overnight, one source told the media.

According to Reuters, the sources wished to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Trump has previously threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on US imports from countries that buy Russian oil unless Russia makes a peace deal with Ukraine.

On Monday evening, after Trump's announcement of increased tariffs, Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesman for India's foreign ministry, called the EU and US "attacks" against the country "unjustified."

- Directing attacks on India is unjustified and unreasonable, he said, according to the AFP news agency.

- Like any other major economy, India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests and economic security.

However, the spokesman did not elaborate on what that means in more detail.
