Sky-high energy prices save the state billions in green subsidies

The price of electricity and gas is skyrocketing, meaning significantly higher bills for consumers. But the treasury is saving over three billion kroner in subsidies for wind turbines and biogas plants.

While record prices for electricity and gas are putting pressure on Danes' wallets, the state is saving billions of kroner in support for green energy. This is reported by Altinget.

With the price increases for natural gas and electricity, the state can save more than 3.5 billion kroner in support for wind turbines and biogas plants, according to calculations from Biogas Denmark and Dansk Energi. The connection is that when the price of natural gas increases, the need for support for green energy decreases.

- The way the support scheme is structured, the rising prices of natural gas mean that the state will save well over a billion kroner on support for biogas, says Frank Rosager, CEO of Biogas Danmark, to the Altinget.
The treasury has the prospect of saving even more on support for wind turbines.

According to Dansk Energi, support for the production of renewable energy from offshore wind turbines, solar cells and onshore wind turbines will fall by approximately 2.6 billion kroner in 2021 compared to 2020. Two billion kroner DKK. has been saved on the support for offshore wind turbines alone.

Several reasons for high prices

There are several reasons for the galloping energy prices, but it is driven by red-hot gas prices, historically high CO2 quota prices, less wind for Danish wind turbines and less water in the Norwegian and Swedish reservoirs than normal.

Both Dansk Energi and Biogas Danmark estimate that an ordinary household heated with a gas boiler and average electricity consumption can see a total heating and electricity bill of around DKK 10,000 more than in a normal year.
CEO of Dansk Energi, Lars Aagaard, believes that politicians should use the saved support kroner from green energy to lower the electricity tax to help low-income groups in particular.

- It would be obvious to move some of the state's saved money back to households, he says to the Alting.
