Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline has leaked in two places

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities confirms two leaks on the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline northeast of Bornholm.

UPDATED: The day after a leak was reported on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, a leak has also occurred on the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline. The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities confirms this in a written statement.

There are two leaks that have occurred northeast of Bornholm. One leak is in international waters, but in the Danish economic zone. The second incident also occurred in international waters, but in the Swedish economic zone.

- The incident is being secured, just like the leak on Nord Stream 2. The incidents on the two pipelines have no supply-related consequences for Denmark, according to the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities.

- As a consequence of these incidents, the Danish Energy Agency has asked Energinet to raise the emergency level for the electricity and gas sector in Denmark.

Do not know the cause

It is too early to say anything about the cause of the leaks, writes the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, which also says that it is in close contact with international partners.

A total of three leaks have been detected on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines. None of them are currently in operation, but contain gas. The leak at Nord Stream 2 occurred southeast of Bornholm off Dueodde.

On Tuesday morning, the Danish Energy Agency announced that it is still assessing the environmental consequences of the leak in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. However, the initial assessment is that the leak will only affect the environment locally.

- Which means that only the area where the gas plume in the water column is located will be affected. The methane gas will then be released into the atmosphere and have a climate-damaging effect, according to the Danish Energy Agency.

Both Nord Stream 1 and 2 run from Russia to Germany. Nord Stream 1 has been closed since the beginning of September, while Nord Stream 2 has never been put into operation.

The gas pipeline was largely ready to be put into operation and had been filled with 300 million cubic meters of gas when German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced, shortly before Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February, that it would be abandoned.
