The German grid operator Amprion has selected NKT as the supplier of land cable systems for the ongoing expansion of the German electricity grid. The Danish cable manufacturer announced this in a press release.

With the turnkey order, which covers two projects, NKT will design, produce and install high-voltage cables based on both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) technology with voltage levels of 110 kV, 380 kV AC and 525 kV DC.

The two projects in question are "Korridor-B V48", which is a cable route of approximately 430 km of 525 kV HVDC land cables, and "Rheinquerung", which includes approximately 120 km of 380 kV AC land cables and approximately 50 km of 110 kV AC land cables for the expansion of the German electricity grid.

With a total value of approximately 1.2 billion euro, which corresponds to 8.94 billion. DKK. NKT continues the positive development from 2023 and increases the order book of high-voltage projects to around 12 billion. euro (89.44 billion DKK).

- We look forward to continuing the long-term cooperation with Amprion and playing a central role in their ambitious development of the electricity grid, which supports the transition to renewable energy. With the order, we benefit from our local presence, focus on sustainability and confirm the strength of our high-voltage portfolio. We are also pleased to continue to expand our strong position in the German market, says Claes Westerlind, CEO of NKT.

Expanding factory in Germany

Based on the order from Amprion, which increases an already record-high order book, and continued, positive expectations for the development of the high-voltage market, especially in Germany, NKT has decided to invest approximately 100 million euros to secure additional capacity at its existing factory in Cologne.

NKT expects the factory expansion to be operational during 2027.  NKT expects to produce the majority of the cables for the two projects at the factory in Cologne. It operates on renewable electricity and is located close to the installation sites in Germany, which will help to significantly reduce the climate footprint of the cable systems.

The billion-euro order from Amprion does not change NKT's financial expectations for 2024. The two projects are expected to be completed from 2029 to 2031.
