TotalEnergies E&P Angola has exercised an option to extend the contract with Maersk Drilling for the use of the drillship Maersk Voyager, which is specially built to solve tasks in ultra-deep water.
With the extension of the contract, the drillship will have the opportunity to set a world record. The ship is thus selected to drill the exploration well of the Ondjaba-1 well, which will be drilled at a depth of 3,628 meters in Angola's Block 48. This is by far a record for the deepest well ever.
The previous record was also set by Maersk Drilling, when Maersk Venturer drilled the Raya-1 well at a depth of 3,400 meters off the coast of Uruguay in 2016.
- We are excited to confirm that we will be drilling for a new world record, says Morten Kelstrup, COO at Maersk Drilling, and continues:
- With the activation of this extension, we look forward to proving that Maersk Drilling and the highly qualified crew on Maersk Voyager can once again break existing limits.
With the exercise of the option to extend the contract, Maersk Voyager will be in Angolan waters until February 2022, after which the ship is scheduled to move to Namibia.
