Ineos: CCS can add 1,000 new jobs to the Esbjerg area

Carbon Capture & Storage

There is great potential in Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) for lots of Danish jobs, especially in Esbjerg, says INEOS. The company is currently involved in Greensand, a project where a consortium consisting of INEOS, Maersk Drilling, Wintershall Dea and Geus is collaborating to investigate the possibilities of storing CO2 underground in the Nini field, writes JudeyWest Coast.

- If it turns out to be possible to store CO2 in the North Sea fields, and you reach a scale of 8 million tons of CO2 storage per year, which corresponds to the figures in the government's climate program, it will create approximately 1,600 jobs, according to our calculations and those of the Global CCS Institute, of which I expect a large part will end up in Esbjerg and with people who currently work in the oil and gas sector, says Johan Byskov, Business Development Manager at INEOS Oil & Gas DK to JydskeVestkysten.

At Christiansborg there are also high hopes that CCS technology will make a major contribution to Denmark's goal of a 70 percent CO2 reduction by 2030. That is why 100 million kroner was recently allocated annually in 2021 and 2022 to support development and demonstration projects for storing CO2 in suitable depleted oil and gas fields in the North Sea.
