HJØRRING: It has long been an open secret that the Port of Hirtshals had a new green vision in the works. Now the port can finally show more concretely what the new "version 2.0" of the port entails.

The Port of Hirtshals will, among other things, expand with a new entrance and an outer foreport basin, which will improve navigation conditions, making it easier for larger ships to reach the port.

A special element of the new vision for the port is green fuel. The Danish-Norwegian company NXT Green Energy has previously announced that it will build one of Scandinavia's largest plants for the production of liquid natural gas and biogas at the Port of Hirtshals.

In order to produce the necessary green electricity for the upcoming plants, the port wants to install more wind turbines at the port. Today, four Vestas wind turbines have been erected without government subsidies, but with, among other things, 14,000 citizen shares. It is still unclear how many wind turbines will be erected in the new vision.

- We want to make the port area a hub for the production and consumption of green energy by creating a sectoral coupling between, among other things, district heating, green electricity and liquid biogas (LBG). For example, several companies in the port have a large amount of surplus heat, which is currently lost. In the future, this can be used in an energy symbiosis of other companies or district heating, says director Steen Harding Hintze.

New company on the way

Hintze was hired under controversial circumstances at the Port of Hirtshals when he was brought in from the competing Port of Hanstholm, where he had been employed for just one month.

Previously, he worked for the energy park GreenLab Skive. This experience will benefit the port when the Port of Hirtshals wants to establish a new development company that will tie the port's many projects together.

- The new development company will also create a knowledge and competence center for the ports in the North Sea, Skagerrak and the Baltic Sea. This will be done by bringing together the port's companies, public authorities, knowledge institutions, private investors and the supply sector to develop new green business models and solutions, says Steen Harding Hintze.

As an additional aspect of the new and improved port facilities, the Port of Hirtshals also wants to include the public, including both the local population in Hirtshals and in Hjørring Municipality, tourists and other visitors. The Port of Hirtshals is currently working on initiatives such as viewing platforms, resting and fishing areas, as well as the possibility of moving around the new areas either by car or on foot.

The next step in the work on the port expansion is the planning process and authority approval. The Port of Hirtshals expects that the new facilities can be put into use during 2025-2026.
