France will limit the price increase on electricity to four percent. This is being done in an attempt to ensure that energy is affordable. Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire told journalists in Paris late Thursday evening, the dpa news agency writes.

Le Maire told the newspaper Le Parisien that the state is in the process of significantly reducing an important tax on electricity. According to the minister, this will result in a loss of revenue for the state of eight billion euros - almost 60 billion kroner.

In addition, the government has instructed the state-owned utility EDF to sell more of the company's cheap nuclear power to smaller competitors. This is also intended to limit price increases. The plan has been approved by the EU Commission, dpa writes.

In a statement, EDF states that the measure will cost the company up to 8.4 billion euros in lost revenue. The ceiling on electricity price increases comes ahead of the presidential election in France in April.

Discussions in Denmark

In Denmark, too, price increases on electricity and petrol have pushed up consumer prices, making everyday life more expensive.

This has prompted Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Dan Jørgensen (S) to call the parties in the Folketing for discussions on the subject on Tuesday.

- The government is taking the rising energy prices very seriously, which we have been following very closely with growing concern, Dan Jørgensen said in a written comment on Thursday evening.

The call for the discussions comes at the request of the leader of the Liberal Party, Jakob Ellemann-Jensen.

In a letter to Minister of Finance Nicolai Wammen (S) earlier Thursday, the Vice-Chairman wrote that the sharp price increases on heating and electricity are particularly affecting pensioners and others who may have difficulty obtaining the economy to hold together.
