The European Commission has on Wednesday given the green light to its response to the US tariffs on steel and aluminium. This is clear after a vote. According to the European Commission, EU countries voted in favour of the proposal to introduce trade countermeasures against the US.

The Commission's proposal was made in response to the US decision in March to impose tariffs on imports of steel and aluminium from the EU. This is only the first of several expected responses to Donald Trump's tariffs on European goods.

- The EU believes that the US tariffs are unjustified and harmful and cause economic damage to both sides and to the global economy.

- The EU has declared its clear desire to find negotiation results with the US that will be balanced and mutually beneficial, says a press release from the European Commission.

Today's vote means that the countermeasures will enter into force when the EU Commission's internal procedures have been completed and the implementing act has been published. The duties will start to be levied from April 15.

However, the EU Commission also states that the countermeasures "will be suspended at any time" if the US agrees to a "fair and balanced" negotiation result. The EU Commission is expected to present proposals for the next part of the possible tariffs on US goods next week. This is to be a response to Trump's announcement of tariffs on cars and a general tariff on European goods of 20 percent.
