Esbjerg must wait longer for direct flight to Stavanger

The planned connection from Esbjerg will not have a new start date after Lygg chooses to open its first North Sea route between other cities.

The direct flight route between Esbjerg and the important Norwegian energy city of Stavanger, which was previously announced to start in February 2026, is being postponed and still has no fixed launch date. Instead, the Finnish airline Lygg is now opening its first North Sea connection between Groningen and Norwich with a planned start date of March 4, 2026. Lygg said in a press release.

According to the company, the change reflects a strategic shift from launching individual routes to building a comprehensive schedule with multiple connections. The routes will only be put into operation when they are assessed to be both commercially and operationally viable. At the same time, Lygg points out that market indicators show increasing activity in the offshore sector towards the fourth quarter, which may have an impact on the timing of the route from Esbjerg.

- Our focus is to launch the Esbjerg-Stavanger route exactly at the time when customers need it, says Roope Kekäläinen, founder of Lygg.

Airport takes postponement in stride

At Esbjerg Airport, the postponement is not described as a setback. Instead, the airport highlights the flexibility in the collaboration with Lygg and sees opportunities in the routes being able to be adapted to developments in travel patterns and demand.

- As an airport, our role is to ensure connections that truly support the needs of the region. Together with Lygg, we can respond to changing travel needs in a way that traditional models cannot. This is particularly important for the offshore market, where demand is project-based and where reliability matters most, says Susanne Kruse Sørensen, Airport Director at Esbjerg Airport.

The Esbjerg–Stavanger connection is therefore still part of the plans, but has been pushed into the background for the time being, while Lygg tests and builds its North Sea route between other destinations.
