The goal of having German gas storage facilities filled to 90 or 95 percent of capacity by November 1 is unrealistic, says Klaus Müller, head of the German Agency for Security of Supply (Bundesnetzagentur).

- If Nord Stream 1 continues to transport only 40 percent of capacity, the storage facilities will at best reach 80 to 85 percent, Müller said on Monday at a crisis meeting with the government in Baden-Württemberg. This is according to sources among the participants, according to Flensborg Avis.

Currently, the storage facilities are 65.9 percent full. Klaus Müller pointed out that many other neighboring countries have less in storage. The federal government and the agency have a goal of saving 20 percent on gas consumption in preparation for winter.

- Currently, the savings are around 14 percent. Without increased efforts, we will not reach our goal, explained Klaus Müller, who participated in the meeting via video.

Baden-Württemberg's Minister President, Winfried Kretschmann from the Greens, had called the meeting to prepare the state for the possibility that Russia will further reduce its gas supplies to Germany due to Western sanctions following the attack on Ukraine. Winfried Kretschmann warned in his welcome that society could be divided.

- If we end up with a gas shortage, it will trigger strong divisive forces. They will be stronger than in connection with the corona pandemic. At the same time, we are still hanging on to it, Kretschmann pointed out.
