UPDATED: Energy trading company Danske Commodities is still earning billions, but it is far from the golden year of 2022. This is shown in financial figures from the company on Thursday morning.
In 2023, it earned 2.7 billion. DKK before tax against 16.7 billion. DKK the year before. This is a decrease of 84 percent. Danske Commodities calls last year "a year of stabilization for the energy markets".
- After a turbulent 2022 with a European supply crisis, the markets began to stabilize and move back towards pre-crisis price levels, it says.
- This stabilization was primarily driven by lower demand for energy, high gas inventories and a mild winter.
Energy traders made a fortune in 2022
Energy traders make money by buying electricity or gas and then selling it on at a higher price. In a market where prices fluctuate wildly in a short time, you can therefore make a lot of money quickly. This was the case in 2022.
- In a year when the markets stabilized after the energy crisis, we as an energy trading company had to adapt to new market conditions with falling energy prices and lower market volatility, explains CEO Helle Østergaard Kristiansen in a press release.
Danske Commodities is not the only Danish energy trading company that has seen its profits fall significantly last year.
This was also true of the Aarhus-based energy trader MFT Energy, which presented its 2023 accounts in March. The company's operating profit ended up at 71.7 million euros, equivalent to around 535 million kroner. In 2022, the company had an operating profit of over 576 million euros. This means that the operating result has fallen by over 87 percent. in a single year.
