AABENRAA: A major, strategic deal between Aabenraa Municipality and Aabenraa Port was signed on Thursday by Mayor Thomas Andresen (L) and Chairman of the Board Erwin Andresen.

The deal means that the municipality will take over a port area in the middle of the city, which will be used for urban development, while the port will take over a former power plant block at Ensted Port a short distance south of the city.

- From Aabenraa Municipality's side, we are investing heavily with this deal in future urban development with built-in climate protection for Aabenraa city. The takeover of the area North of Kilen provides completely new opportunities for attractive urban development in the middle of Aabenraa city, close to both forest and water. The takeover plays into the general future vision for the city of Aabenraa with both settlement, sustainability and urban transformation in mind, says the mayor.

The area can accommodate up to 600 homes, cafés, restaurants, specialty shops, green living areas, streams and basins for collecting rainwater.

- Other municipalities have succeeded in making the right connection when it comes to port development. In Middelfart there is a good interaction between urban development and culture, while in Fredericia they have expanded their activities with a transport and logistics center by the highway. We see these as good examples of the cities and ports of the future, says Thomas Andresen.

New museum

The transaction is also a major step in the ambitions of a new museum building with a focus on South Jutland art and maritime history in the area north of Kilen.

The Port of Aabenraa's takeover of EV3 at Ensted Port provides the opportunity to continue the strategic port development.

- The takeover realizes the ambitions in the ownership strategy for the port, which the city council approved in 2019. When the Port of Aabenraa also takes over the area from EV3 of approximately 100,000 m2, the port will own the majority of the old power plant area and thus have added a total of approximately 350,000 m2, which can be used to further develop future port operations, says Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Port of Aabenraa, Erwin Andresen.

The mayor of Aabenraa Municipality is pleased that the Port of Aabenraa will now have even better conditions to continue its strategic development, including sustainable development and Power-to-X.

Earlier this week, Linde Gas announced plans to get involved in a Power-to-X project at the Port of Aabenraa, and both that and the trade with the municipality fit into the port's agenda with a focus on green transformation and sustainability, says the chairman of the board.
