FREDERIKSHAVN: Birgit S. Hansen (S) is leaving the mayor's post in Frederikshavn in favor of a job at KL, she and KL announced today. This is happening at the same time that a legal investigation into her role in a highly controversial port case is underway.
The mayor has been accused of failing to tell the rest of the municipal council that the port's finances were in bad shape - so bad that the municipality was forced to take over the independent port in the spring.
The Finance Committee has ordered the legal investigation, and at the same time the committee has asked the municipal supervision under the Danish Social Insurance Board to assess whether the case has been handled according to the book.
- I know there is a big pink elephant in the room. But that investigation will come to the same result, regardless of whether I am mayor or not. I will be interviewed for the investigation on November 12, and I will not run away from it, even if I get a new job, says Birgit S. Hansen to Nordjyske.
S-leaders to meet
According to the newspaper, it is still unclear who will replace her as mayor until the next election, but Deputy Mayor Peter Nielsen (S) and group chairman Karsten Thomsen were invited to a meeting at the mayor's office at lunchtime. Peter Nielsen states that he was not informed about the mayor's new job until the public was informed.
In June, the party chose Anders Brandt Sørensen (S) as the new mayoral candidate, but since he is not on the city council now, he cannot take over the position. Therefore, the arrow probably points to one of the two.
The new mayor will be elected by the municipal council, where the Social Democrats have an absolute majority.
The Liberal Party's group chairman, Jan Bjeldbak, tells Nordjyske that he hopes the change of mayor will be "a golden opportunity to get on the bus together" and cooperate broadly - no matter who the replacement will be.
- No matter who it is, I'll reach out, he says.
