The transport sector is increasingly showing interest in using green alternatives to diesel, and now transport companies will have the opportunity to refuel with liquefied natural gas (LNG), which has a much lower impact on the climate, in Hirtshals. On Wednesday, February 7, a new LNG gas filling station will open, and the climate benefits of using this type of fuel are significant, as trucks emit 20 percent less CO2, eliminate sulfur emissions and reduce harmful soot particle emissions. The facility is located at Hirtshals Transport Center close to the harbor. The Port of Hirtshals writes in a press release.

The LNG facility has been established through a collaboration between Hirtshals Port Fund, Hirtshals Transport Center and Q8 and is one of the first in Denmark. In 2022, a similar facility opened in Padborg, and when transport companies also have the opportunity to refuel LNG in Hirtshals, it gives them an incentive to invest in more trucks that can run on LNG gas.

- Freight transport now has a much better opportunity to run on liquefied natural gas. With the opening of the facility in Hirtshals, it is just as easy for transport companies to use gas-powered trucks on the route from the German border to Hirtshals as it is to use diesel-powered trucks. Now, for example, drivers can fill the trucks with LNG when they come from or are going to Norway, the Faroe Islands or Iceland, says CEO Per Holm Nørgaard from Hirtshals Port and adds:

- The tank facility contributes to strengthening our position as a central hub for freight traffic in the northern part of Europe. Hirtshals is an important link between Norway and the EU, and this has had a major impact on the location of the facility.

Every year, almost 150,000 trucks pass through the Port of Hirtshals, and among players in heavy land transport, greater attention has been paid to alternatives to diesel-powered trucks in recent years. In October 2023, Denmark's largest charging station for electric trucks opened at the Hirtshals Transport Center, so truckers have several environmentally and climate-friendly alternatives to diesel when they refuel in Hirtshals.

More green initiatives on the way

The facility fits perfectly into the Port of Hirtshals' strategy to become the greenest port in Europe when it comes to transport and logistics solutions as well as the production of green electricity and alternative fuels.

The port is working on a number of initiatives that will have a major impact on business development in Hirtshals in the coming years. Most recently, the Port of Hirtshals has put out to tender the establishment of up to nine wind turbines on the port area and a significant expansion of the port. In addition, the port is working in collaboration with the other partners in Greenport Scandinavia on the storage and shipping of CO2 from the port to empty oil and gas fields in the North Sea.
