In December 2020, the conciliation group behind the North Sea Agreement (S, V, RV, DF, SF and K) agreed to set an end date for fossil fuel extraction on Danish soil and cancelled all future government tender rounds.

However, the ambition to stop production should be brought forward to 2031. At least 17 NGOs and almost 100 researchers believe this. Therefore, in an open letter, they call on the government to renegotiate the North Sea Agreement and bring forward the stop to extraction in the North Sea. This is stated by the Climate Movement in Denmark in a press release.

The letter highlights the study from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, which states that rich countries like Denmark should phase out fossil fuel production by 2031 at the latest, i.e. 19 years before the end date of the current North Sea Agreement. According to the study, earlier phasing out will give poorer countries more time to adapt.

Therefore, the signatories believe that it is problematic that the North Sea Agreement continues to allow fossil fuel expansion until 2050, contrary to climate science and the International Energy Agency's scenarios for net zero in 2050.

- When researchers calculate the CO2 budget and conclude that 2050 is an appropriate end date for the poorest of the oil-producing countries, whose economies are heavily dependent on revenues from fossil fuel production, it only makes clear how unambitious an end date it is for a rich country like Denmark, says Lasse Nyholm Jensen from Fossilfri Fremtid.

The signatories of the letter emphasize how important it is that Denmark takes on the historical and moral responsibility that the Climate Act dictates:

- It is imperative to help a just transition get underway globally. And it is imperative if Denmark really wants to lead the way for a fossil-free future, says Clara Berg-Jensen from Fossilfree Future.

The NGOs that have signed the letter are the Danish Climate Movement, Greenpeace, the Council for Green Transition, Plastic Change, Inter-Agency Cooperation, CARE, Mission East, CARE, RE:DK, Oxfam Denmark, Global Focus, the Green Youth Movement, NOAH, Global Action, Forests of the World, Responsible Future, and the Danish Nature Conservation Association.
