The Danish Utilities Authority is now setting new ceiling prices for how much electricity and gas suppliers are allowed to charge customers who are taken over from bankrupt or discontinued companies.

The Danish Energy Supply Authority has set the annual bankruptcy surcharges for both electricity and gas, which will come into effect at the turn of the year.

The surcharges function as a ceiling on what energy and gas suppliers may charge from customers who are left without a supplier because their previous company has gone bankrupt or can no longer supply for other reasons.

For the electricity market, the decision means that electricity trading companies may only continue to add a limited surcharge on top of the spot price when they take over customers from bankrupt companies.

The method for small electricity consumers has also been updated so that the surcharge more closely reflects actual market conditions.

In the gas area, the Danish Energy Supply Authority has set the price of the so-called bankruptcy product, which also consists of the market price plus a surcharge that reflects the levels otherwise used in the gas market.

The aim here is also to ensure that consumers are not hit by unreasonably high prices when they are suddenly transferred to a new supplier.

The Danish Utilities Authority sets prices every year before December 1. The decisions for 2026 can be seen on the authority's website.
