The EU Commission sees, according to Klimamonitor on the possibility of introducing a binding target for electrification to kick-start the development that has currently stalled. The intention is to increase the EU's energy independence.
According to the media, a source in the Commission states that the desire for increased electrification is also linked to the ambition to make the EU independent of Russian energy. At the same time, concerns are growing about simply replacing dependence on Russian gas and oil with a new dependence on the United States, where President Donald Trump's statements have created uncertainty about transatlantic cooperation.
In addition, EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen has described Trump's threat to take over Greenland as a "wake-up call" to journalists and pointed to increasing unrest among both state and energy ministers.
