The TSOs in the Baltic Sea region, which are responsible for maintaining and developing the transmission systems, have agreed on Thursday to begin preparations for establishing cooperation on a Baltic Sea electricity grid.
The TSOs believe that the Baltic Sea region has the potential to contribute significantly to green energy policy goals by expanding offshore wind and electricity transmission across national borders. An offshore electricity grid will be part of the solution to exploit the potential.
The purpose of the cooperation agreement, entitled “Baltic Offshore Grid Initiative”, is to develop common planning principles for offshore electricity grids in the Baltic Sea.
A study of cooperation on offshore wind in the Baltic Sea by the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP), a cooperation between the countries around the Baltic Sea to develop electricity and gas markets in the region, shows that the potential in the Baltic Sea exceeds 90 GW. The total potential amount of energy that can be produced is 325 TWh/year.
The following TSOs have announced their intention to sign the cooperation agreement “Baltic Offshore Grid Initiative”: Fingrid from Finland, Svenska kraftnät from Sweden, Energinet from Denmark, 50Hertz from Germany, Elering from Estonia, AST from Latvia and Litgrid AB from Lithuania. Statnett from Norway participates in an observer role.
