The engineering company Sweco will assist the Danish Energy Agency as a technical advisor in the preparatory work to tender the task of constructing the world's first energy island. The agreement, which has a value of 50 million DKK, will run for four years with the possibility of a one-year extension, and will last at least until the owner and contractor are selected.
- With the energy islands, the Danish Energy Agency is facing a particularly exciting, but also extremely complex implementation task. In this connection, we need specialized technical assistance, including to determine functional requirements for the energy island in the North Sea. After a public tender for the consultancy task, the choice fell on Sweco. We look forward to the collaboration, says Mads Krogh, program manager for energy islands at the Danish Energy Agency.
The energy island was adopted in the Danish Parliament a year ago. In February, it was specified that it would be constructed as a dammed island in the North Sea in shared ownership between the state and one or more private players. The island has an estimated price of 210 billion DKK.
In the first phase, the energy island must be able to handle a minimum of 3 GW and in the long term 10 GW. The project holds great technological development potential within the green transition. The hope is that the energy island will be able to form the basis for a green business adventure for Denmark. That is why Sweco also looks forward to becoming part of the project.
- We are proud, happy and humbled to have been assigned this historically large and ambitious social task for Denmark, which will set an example for the rest of the world. The energy island is visionary in design and must be solved with equal parts experience and innovation. It is a large-scale development project with a long-term perspective that creates sufficient room for innovation for the benefit of all parties involved, says Jes Hansen, Director of Sweco's Infrastructure, Water & Environment division.
