Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) on Friday highlighted, among other things, the Danish plans for energy islands in her speech at a virtual climate summit hosted by US President Joe Biden on Thursday and Friday.
- Denmark will soon make the world's first energy island a reality. Already today, almost 50 percent of Denmark's electricity comes from wind power. And we have plans to build more wind power, says Mette Frederiksen in her speech, which was held shortly after Microsoft founder Bill Gates gave a speech.
Mette Frederiksen says in a speech of about three minutes that she expects the green transition to create new jobs. This is also one of Joe Biden's hopes for the green transition.
Most recently, a broad majority in the Danish Parliament agreed in February to an agreement on the construction and ownership of a new energy island in the North Sea.
The artificial island 80 kilometers out in the North Sea will be the largest construction project in Danish history, with a price tag of DKK 210 billion.
This is equivalent to up to five Great Belt bridges or four Fehmarnbelt connections, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities has previously stated.
Biden brings the US back into the fold
39 countries and the EU summit are participating in the climate summit. Denmark is one of only six EU countries to have received an invitation. The same has been done by Italy, France, Poland, Germany and Spain.
The Danish government's supporting parties have called it crucial that the US, after the change of president from Donald Trump to Joe Biden, rejoin the Paris Agreement, so that the global transition to lower greenhouse gas emissions can continue with the US as an important player.
At the same time, both the Radical Party, the Socialist Party and the Unity Party believe that the government is too slow on the climate front. However, the Prime Minister did not address this in his speech.
The Danish Parliament has adopted a climate law that includes a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent by 2030 compared to the level in 1990.
On Thursday, Biden announced that he will work to reduce the US's emissions of climate-damaging substances in the coming years. They must be reduced to half the level from 2005 by the end of this decade, Biden promises.
