In May, top politicians from Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium met for the North Sea Summit at the port of Esbjerg. Here, the Esbjerg Declaration was signed, in which the countries agreed to significantly increase the amount of offshore wind in the North Sea. Now it's the Baltic Sea's turn. (Archive photo.)

Major wind summit on the Baltic Sea to be held on Bornholm

DK Vindkraft and several media outlets have learned that Denmark is inviting people to a European summit on Bornholm regarding the development of offshore wind in the Baltic Sea.

In the spring, the North Sea Summit was held in Esbjerg, where Denmark, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands signed the Esbjerg Declaration and agreed to deliver at least 65 GW of offshore wind in the North Sea by 2030 and increase capacity to at least 150 GW by 2050.

Now Denmark is again inviting to a European offshore wind summit in the form of the Baltic Energy Security Summit, which will be held on August 30. This is reported by Altinget and TV2 Bornholm, just as DK Vindkraft has also had the story confirmed by several sources.

It is not yet clear who will be represented at the summit, but as in Esbjerg, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will attend. In addition, ministers from Finland, Sweden, Germany, Poland and the Baltic states are also expected to participate.

There are great opportunities in offshore wind in the Baltic Sea. The EU Commission estimates the potential for offshore wind at 93 GW, which corresponds to green electricity for 105 million Danish households. This is almost a third of the energy from offshore wind that the EU, according to the Commission, will need up to 2050.

Happy at Green Power Denmark

It was only a few weeks ago that Green Power Denmark's director, Kristian Jensen, called in an article in Børsen for a boost in plans to exploit wind resources in the Baltic Sea.

"When countries join forces in regional cooperation, the expansion of offshore wind and energy infrastructure can be done in a much more efficient way," wrote Kristian Jensen in the column, which continued:

"The sooner Europe shows its will to act, the sooner consumers and businesses will turn their attention away from the fossil fuels that threaten our freedom and security, and towards green technologies."

That will to act is evident now with the summit on Bornholm. This brings joy to Kristian Jensen.

- It is an important signal that the meeting is at prime minister level. It means that political capital is being invested in the green agenda, and that civil service and industries in the other Baltic Sea countries are also tuning in, he tells the Altinget.

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities has not wanted to confirm or deny whether the meeting, the summit on Bornholm, will take place to DK Vindkraft.
