Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is to write a report on closer defense cooperation in the Baltic Sea, Norwegian media reported on Wednesday, amid a major political focus on the security situation in the region.
The report is due to be ready before a NATO summit in June. It will discuss closer cooperation "in the turbulent times we live in, with war in Europe, new wars in the Middle East and increased rivalry between the great powers." Stoltenberg tells the Norwegian media VG.
- It is the first time in history that all the Nordic and Baltic countries are in the same security policy structure - in NATO, he says.
- It opens up some opportunities for closer cooperation.
Sweden and Finland have both become part of the alliance over the past two years - namely after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
There is currently a lot of attention on ships moving around the Baltic Sea and exhibiting suspicious behavior. As recently as December, underwater power and data cables were damaged.
The defense alliance NATO has decided to increase its presence in the Baltic Sea as a result of several cable breaks.
