The government will be the first country in the world to establish energy islands. This will begin a new era in the development of offshore wind, moving from stand-alone offshore wind farms to energy islands.

The government announced this on Wednesday at a press conference attended by Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen (S), Climate Minister Dan Jørgensen (S) and Environment Minister Lea Wermelin (S). The press conference is about the first part of the government's climate action plan.

The two energy islands are to be established by 2030 at the latest, and they are to be located in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, respectively. Energy islands can be physical constructions, such as platforms or artificial sand islands, which are connected to the electricity grids of several countries as well as to surrounding offshore wind farms, it is explained in a factsheet about the first part of the climate action plan.

- With the establishment of the world's first two energy islands, we are embarking on a completely new era in the Danish wind adventure, says Dan Jørgensen (S).

- We are massively increasing the amount of offshore wind, and at the same time we will make it possible to use the green power in the tank of trucks, cargo ships and aircraft.

- We are presenting a package that both delivers CO2 reductions in the short term and lays the groundwork for a future climate-neutral Denmark, says he.
