Polish President Andrzej Duda has signed a law paving the way for 5.9 GW of offshore wind energy in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea by 2030. The law was passed by the Polish Senate on January 13. The law was a long time in the making and thus required negotiations for over a year before politicians agreed.

The new law includes a support system, adjustments to the legal framework and rules for connecting offshore wind farms to the Polish grid. The goal is to reach 5.9 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and 1 GW by 2040. The law officially enters into force on February 4.

Poland, together with Denmark and the European Commission, among others, signed a declaration last year to increase cooperation on the development of offshore wind in the Baltic Sea. Sweden and the Baltic countries were also included in the agreement.
