Ørsted has entered into a power purchase agreement with the German food retailer Rewe Group. Over a ten-year period, Rewe has committed to purchasing 100 MW from Ørsted's upcoming offshore wind farm Borkum Riffgrund 3, which corresponds to the consumption of 1,500 REWE stores.
- There is an urgent need for the world to switch to renewable energy to reduce CO2 emissions. To succeed in this transition, governments, energy companies and business customers must take action. Rewe Group has a long tradition of purchasing sustainable electricity, and by purchasing electricity from Borkum Riffgrund 3, they are supporting the expansion of new, cheap renewable energy on an industrial scale, says Rasmus Errboe, Regional Director for Ørsted in Continental Europe.
Borkum Riffgrund 3 is expected to be commissioned in 2025, provided Ørsted makes a final investment decision, which is expected to happen before the end of 2021.
Ørsted won the right to build the project at the German offshore wind auctions with a bid of zero euros per MWh. This means that the wind farm will be built without direct state support.
The wind farm will have a total export capacity of 900 MW and will be located in the German part of the North Sea close to Ørsted's existing offshore wind farms Borkum Riffgrund 1 and Borkum Riffgrund 2.
Previously, Amazon has also entered into an agreement with Ørsted for 250 MW from the wind farm.
