New drone airspace to strengthen safety and prevent drone shutdowns

A new drone strategy, which has just been submitted for consultation, is intended to make it easier to identify legal drones and handle security incidents without affecting socially beneficial drone flights.

A new national drone airspace will ensure that all drones can be identified and monitored in the future, so that the authorities can respond more quickly to unknown drone operations. The initiative is part of a new drone strategy that has just been sent out for consultation after sightings of unknown drones at several Danish airports in the autumn led to a total shutdown of all drone flights for a week. This is stated by DI Transport, which has contributed knowledge and experience to the work of modernizing the rules, in a press release.

- In Denmark, drones are a completely integrated part of our everyday lives, where they solve important societal tasks every day with inspection, surveying and monitoring for, among others, the police, fire brigade and defense. The hybrid war alert that went out in September made clear the need for a drone airspace where all legal drones are registered, so that we can quickly identify and respond to unknown drones without affecting drones that are useful to society, says Patrick Alexander Liebgott, chief consultant and drone expert at DI Transport.

According to the strategy, a traffic information and management system should make it easier for the authorities to distinguish between legal and illegal drone flights, so that security incidents can be handled without hitting drones that perform societal tasks for, among other things, the police, emergency services and defense.

The strategy should also provide a better framework for the commercial use of drones. Among other things, it proposes that drones can eventually operate in the same airspace as manned aircraft. This requires that manned aviation be made electronically visible so that drones can navigate safely and avoid, also when flying outside the operator's line of sight and over longer distances, for example during operations in the North Sea, where drones can be used for delivery or service of offshore turbines or platforms.

- The new guidelines could be a breakthrough for the Danish drone industry because they enable more advanced flying over longer distances, where the drone is outside the operator's line of sight. When we update the framework in line with technological development, drones will be able to solve more and more complex societal tasks - from freight to island communities to offshore activities and critical infrastructure. The new strategy is an ambitious plan to improve the framework conditions for the drone industry in Denmark, and will require a number of technical solutions from developers and operators, says Patrick Alexander Liebgott.

According to the Danish Transport Authority, there are currently just over 15,000 certified, professional drone operators in Denmark, and the number is increasing.
