The government and a broad majority in the Danish Parliament have reached a political agreement for the electricity infrastructure of the future. The agreement lays the first foundation for Denmark to be able to use more green electricity in the future than today.

- In the future, Denmark will be powered by green electricity to a much greater extent. With this agreement, we are laying the foundation for the electrification of Denmark. We are ensuring that the electricity grid does not become a stumbling block, but rather a solid starting point for supporting the green transition. The agreement helps ensure that we are at the forefront of developments while not at the expense of consumers' electricity bills, says Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Dan Jørgensen (S).

The agreement also delivers on one of the pillars of the upcoming electrification strategy. When the regulation of the grid companies is made ready for increased electrification, even better conditions are created for the green power to be utilized in the best possible way, and for actors across sectors to have the best opportunities to electrify.

At the same time, orderly conditions in the electricity sector are ensured, with equal competition between the grid companies, which protects the consumer from higher electricity prices, according to a press release.

- The electrification of society places great and new demands on our electricity infrastructure. That is why we in the Liberal Party are pleased that with the agreement we ensure that the grid companies can make the investments that are necessary to handle the future's increased electricity consumption and dynamic electricity production, says Carsten Kissmeyer (V).

New assessments by EWII indicate that the electrification of Denmark will be more expensive than previously expected. EWII's assessment is that the electricity grid requires investments of 6.4 billion. DKK towards 2040 for the electricity grid to be able to handle the larger amount of green electricity.

It is not clear from the agreement text how much will be invested in the electricity grid, but that a large part of the task will be transferred to the downstream companies, which must have the right conditions:

"The regulation of the grid companies must be geared to enable the grid companies to support electrification by balancing timely and effective investments and cost-effective operation. The grid companies must therefore have a technology-neutral framework so that electrification can be handled in the most cost-effective way, whether it is flexibility services or grid expansion," it is clear from, among other things, aftaletteksten

The agreement consists of the Government, the Liberal Party, the Danish People's Party, the Socialist People's Party, the Radical Left, the Unity List, the Conservative People's Party, the Liberal Alliance and the Alternative.
