NKT has joined the First Movers Coalition (FMC) to promote the use of low-carbon aluminum. As part of FMC's aluminum sector, NKT is committed to ensuring that at least ten percent of all primary aluminum the company purchases annually is low-carbon aluminum by 2030. The cable manufacturer announced this in a statement.

The First Movers Coalition, led by the World Economic Forum, brings together international companies to support the decarbonization of industries where CO2 emissions are traditionally difficult to reduce. FMC will help create demand for new, climate-friendly technologies and materials that are currently only available on a limited scale.

- At NKT, it is a strategic priority to continuously reduce the CO2 intensity of our power cables. This supports both our own sustainability goals and our customers' ambitions for decarbonization. Our participation in the First Movers Coalition strengthens this commitment. We are pleased to send a clear signal about the need for climate-friendly technologies, thereby accelerating their deployment and supporting the decarbonization of some of the world's most carbon-intensive sectors, says Anthony Abbotts, Vice President and Head of Sustainability at NKT.

The coalition's goal is for companies to push forward the development of low-carbon solutions through concrete procurement commitments, so that they become commercially viable before 2030. According to the World Economic Forum, half of the emission reductions needed up to 2050 are expected to come from technologies that do not yet exist at scale.

- NKT's decision to join the First Movers Coalition marks an important step forward in the aluminum industry's journey towards full decarbonization of the value chain. This commitment reflects an ambitious will to drive transformative change, and we are inspired by the increasing collaboration between industry leaders to accelerate progress. Through the combined strength of the coalition, we can amplify our efforts and create meaningful, lasting results for the sector,” says Noam Boussidan, Program Manager, First Movers Coalition, World Economic Forum.

NKT’s entry into FMC builds on the company’s existing collaboration with Norwegian company Hydro. In April 2025, the parties entered into an agreement to supply low-carbon aluminum until 2033. Aluminum is a central component in medium and high-voltage cables, which play a key role in the electrification of society and the expansion of Europe’s electricity grid.

Hydro’s REDUXA 4.0 products, which NKT will gain access to through the agreement, have a documented carbon footprint of no more than 4 kg CO2e per kilo of aluminum – around a quarter of the global industry average.
