ESBJERG: Esbjerg Municipality is working on a model where Esbjerg Port and Esbjerg Airport will be jointly managed under financially separate companies. If the plan becomes a reality, it will be the first time in Denmark that a port and an airport will be organized in this way. According to Mayor Jesper Frost Rasmussen (V), the two infrastructures are increasingly interconnected, not least because Esbjerg plays a central role in both energy and supply security in the North Sea. According to the mayor, there are therefore "obvious synergies", writes Søfart.dk.

Back in 2003, the municipality assessed that there was not much to be gained from cooperation between the port and the airport. But today the conditions are different, partly because the offshore industry has changed the role of both the port and the airport. Work on the new model began in connection with last year's budget agreement, when the city council decided to investigate the possibilities and the legal framework for closer cooperation. A legal assessment has since determined that joint management is possible as long as the port and airport are operated as economically separate companies.

At the Port of Esbjerg, Director Dennis Jul Pedersen supports the plans. He points out that closer cooperation can strengthen Esbjerg's overall role as an energy hub, partly because both helicopter and drone traffic to the North Sea require joint competencies. A final decision on the organizational model is expected in the spring of 2026, estimates Jesper Frost Rasmussen.
