This year, around 3,000 tourists have paid DKK 400 to sail on the good ship Chimera out to the offshore wind farm Vesterhav Syd, which is located about 9 km from Hvide Sande. On the three-hour sailing trip, guests have the opportunity to experience the 20 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines, which supply electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of 170,000 households. This is reported by Green Power Denmark.
A few years ago, skipper Fritz Kott began offering wind turbine safaris after many guests on his harbor tours showed great interest in the three onshore wind turbines that stand at the exit from Hvide Sande Harbor.
- Many guests were impressed by how positive an impact the three wind turbines have had on Hvide Sande Harbor, and how cheap heat they provide to the citizens of Hvide Sande. That's why the idea of a wind turbine safari was right on the right foot when an offshore wind farm was to be built off the coast, says Fritz Kott, skipper and co-owner of M/S Chimera.
Vesterhav Syd was inaugurated in 2024, as was its sister farm Vesterhav Nord. The two farms have brought together 41 wind turbines with a total capacity of 344 MW and around 4,400 local co-owners. Previously, there was opposition to the project, but the mood has changed.
According to Arne Rahbek, Community & Stakeholder Manager at Vattenfall, the wind turbine safaris have contributed to this development because they give people the opportunity to experience the turbines up close and form their own opinion.
- There have been many critical letters from the editor and heated local debates. But now the wind turbines are accepted to a greater extent, and the local population can see that it was not as bad as some opponents had imagined. Tourism is bigger than ever, and the prices for summer houses have never been higher. We at Vattenfall are naturally happy about that, says the Vattenfall man.
