Green Power Denmark welcomes the government's tender ambitions, but misses an open-door solution

The government is calling for negotiations on the framework for the planned nine gigawatts, which are to be tendered by the government. It is praised by Green Power Denmark, which, however, emphasizes that a solution to the problems with the open door scheme is urgent.

With the ambition to send the planned nine GW of offshore wind to government tender this year, Climate, Energy and Supply Minister Lars Aagaard (M) has called for preliminary negotiations in March. This brings joy to the green business organization Green Power Denmark.

- The minister is to be commended for boosting the process regarding the state tenders for offshore wind. We are already behind and in a mad rush if the offshore wind turbines are to be spinning before 2030 and deliver green power for our climate goals. Therefore, we also have to offer all nine gigawatts of offshore wind at once and not offer one offshore wind farm at a time, says Kristian Jensen, CEO of Green Power Denmark, in a press release and continues:

- At the same time, we must raise the standards for what is expected of future offshore wind farms. The upcoming tenders must not only focus on price, but promote sustainable value chains and innovative solutions for a better marine environment, says Kristian Jensen.

The government will use the time until the negotiations to analyze whether and how the actors can be given more freedom to build the offshore wind turbines closer to each other, which could open the possibility for more GW.

- With the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, Denmark is in a hot spot for the wind energy that the whole world demands. We must make full use of that potential. It is therefore good that the minister will look at the mill density. It can potentially increase capacity significantly and give Danes more green electricity, says Kristian Jensen.

A solution to the open door scheme is urgent

However, even though the government tenders will probably start soon, Green Power Denmark emphasizes that the nine GW of offshore wind does not solve the problem with the open door scheme, which the government has recently put on hold.

- We need green electricity today and tomorrow. The nine GW of offshore wind is important for our climate ambitions, but we need the offshore wind farms under the open door scheme if Denmark is to become a pioneering country within Power-to-X. Here, we cannot wait until the state offshore wind farms are in operation in 2030. Because by then, other countries will have long been on the market for green fuels for heavy transport, says Kristian Jensen and continues:

- The government has given the green industry, which is lagging behind in the climate battle, a proper jaw-dropper. We do not know what the government wants, and we risk that project developers and others who are helping to drive the green transition will withdraw. It is therefore absolutely essential that a solution be found as soon as possible. We are happy to contribute constructively to that work, but it requires the government to get involved.
