With the ambition to send the planned nine GW of offshore wind to the state tender this year, Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M) has called for initial negotiations in March. This brings joy to the green business organization Green Power Denmark.
- The minister should be praised for accelerating the process of the state tender for offshore wind. We are already behind and are in a crazy hurry if the offshore wind turbines are to spin by 2030 and deliver green electricity to our climate goals. That is why we must also tender all nine gigawatts of offshore wind at once and not tender one offshore wind farm at a time, says Kristian Jensen, CEO of Green Power Denmark, in a press release and continues:
- At the same time, we must raise the standards for what is expected of the offshore wind farms of the future. The upcoming tenders should not only focus on price, but also promote sustainable value chains and innovative solutions for a better marine environment, says Kristian Jensen.
The government will use the time leading up to the negotiations to analyze whether and how the players can be given more freedom to build offshore wind turbines closer to each other, which could open up the possibility of more GW.
- With the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, Denmark is in a sweet spot for the wind energy that the whole world is demanding. We must fully exploit that potential. Therefore, it is good that the minister will look at the turbine density. This could potentially increase capacity significantly and provide Danes with more green electricity, says Kristian Jensen.
Solution to open-door scheme urgent
But even though the state tenders will probably start soon, Green Power Denmark emphasizes that the nine GW of offshore wind does not solve the problem with the open-door scheme, which the government has recently put on hold.
- We need green electricity today and tomorrow. The nine GW of offshore wind are important for our climate ambitions, but we need the offshore wind farms under the open-door scheme if Denmark is to become a pioneer country within Power-to-X. Here we cannot wait until the state-owned offshore wind farms are in operation in 2030. Because by that time other countries will have long since entered the market for green fuels for heavy transport, says Kristian Jensen and continues:
- The government has given the green industry a proper shake of the jaws, which is groggy in the climate fight. We do not know what the government wants, and we risk that project developers and others who are helping to drive the green transition will withdraw. Therefore, it is absolutely crucial that a solution is found as soon as possible. We are happy to contribute constructively to this work, but it requires the government to get involved.
