UN Secretary-General calls for tough compromises at climate summit

No country will have all its wishes fulfilled, but must compromise, says UN chief about COP30 climate summit.

In the negotiating rooms, the fronts are sharply drawn, and red lines between the world's poor and rich countries threaten with possible collapse.

But UN Secretary-General António Guterres is firmly convinced that the world's countries can reach an agreement on the difficult issues at this year's climate summit, COP30, in Belém, Brazil. He said this in a speech at the summit on Thursday, the day before the official deadline. Here he calls on all countries in the world to show flexibility.

- I strongly appeal to all delegations to show the will and flexibility to deliver results that protect people and keep the goal of a temperature increase of 1.5 degrees alive, he says.

That may be needed, because with one day left of the summit, two demands in particular are in potential conflict with each other.

While the world's poor countries are demanding a new target for financing climate adaptation, the developed countries, led by the EU, will only send more money to the south if they are promised a clear path towards more CO2 reductions.

- We want this world to come together to reduce emissions. And if we cannot be reassured about that, then there will be no agreement, said Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M) on Wednesday.

The UN chief wants both issues to find their way into the agreement text.

- I welcome the calls for a mechanism for just transition and the growing coalition that is asking for clarity on the transition away from fossil fuels, he said in his speech.

He emphasizes that countries must adapt to the fact that not all of their demands can be met.

- No delegation will leave Belém with everything it wants. But all delegations have an obligation to reach a balanced agreement.
