The 30 MW German wind farm at Niemegk, located near Berlin, has been purchased by European Energy. The Danish development company has operated the wind farm for a number of years on behalf of Funen-based SEF, which purchased the wind farm in 2014, but now European itself will become the owner of the 15 turbines.

According to SEF, the utility company had several reasons for parting with the German wind farm.

- We are in a phase right now where repowering is the way forward, and European Energy is completely on home turf. At the same time, we at SEF want to focus even more on local projects around renewable energy. Therefore, it was now both an economically and strategically right time for us to step out of German wind and use our strengths locally in Denmark and on South Funen, says CEO of SEF A/S, Lars Foged.

And it is precisely a repowering of the project that European Energy is planning. The renewal that European Energy is planning will increase the wind farm's production capacity to 64.8 MW.

- We recognize the untapped potential of the Niemegk wind farm. Our initiative to rebuild the plant is a testament to our commitment to strengthening Germany's renewable energy infrastructure to meet growing energy needs, said Johannes Thon, Vice President for Project Development in Germany at European Energy.

With the plan to replace existing turbines with newer turbines, European Energy will not only more than double the energy capacity, but also significantly increase the total energy production due to the greater height and efficiency of the upgraded turbines.

Thus, European Energy expects to be able to quadruple the current production, so that in the future it will be able to supply 43,000 European households compared to 11,000 today.
