Energy company scraps bonus agreement and suspends three employees

Three employees have been provisionally suspended in a case involving multi-million-dollar bonuses at Energi Danmark.

A bonus agreement without a ceiling that would give a small handful of employees in Energi Danmark bonuses worth millions has been entered into illegally and is invalid. This was announced by the company Andel in a press release on Sunday evening on behalf of Energi Danmark. Andel owns Energi Danmark together with NRGI.

The case concerns three employees in the cooperatively owned Energi Danmark who have earned three-digit million-dollar bonuses. Jesper Hjulmand, who is the chairman of the board of directors of the company, has however stated that the employees will not receive bonuses of either double or triple digit million amounts.

- This is a share purchase agreement that was entered into without the knowledge of the board of directors and under circumstances that make it (the bonus agreement, ed.) invalid, stated Jesper Hjulmand and deputy chairman Jacob Vittrup in a written, joint quote on Sunday evening.

Have attempted dialogue, but now the employees are suspended

At the same time, Energi Danmark states in the press release that it has attempted to enter into dialogue with the three employees in question who were covered by the bonus agreement. However, this has not borne fruit, and the three employees were suspended on Sunday.

- However, this does not change the fact that the bonus agreement without a ceiling for the three employees is invalid, and that Energi Danmark will maintain this point of view – even if there were to be legal repercussions, state Jesper Hjulmand and Jacob Vittrup.

The business media Finans wrote on March 19 that two senior employees had earned triple-digit million bonuses totaling 550 million. According to the media, the bonuses ran away because they were without a ceiling and because the company has made more money than anyone had apparently dreamed of. On Friday, Berlingske reported that three employees were involved.

Director did not have Monday to give bonus agreements

When Energi Danmark declares the bonus agreement invalid, it is after a "thorough legal investigation".

According to the company, the three employees had entered into a collective agreement with the former CEO without the board of directors knowing about it.

But the legal investigation concludes, among other things, that the director did not have the mandate to enter into such an agreement on behalf of Energi Danmark.

Neither Energi Danmark, Andel or NRGI wish to comment on the case or the individual personnel matters further on Sunday evening.
