Electricity prices set a record: There have never been so many hours with negative electricity prices.

Sunday saw a record number of hours with negative electricity prices in Denmark, especially west of the Great Belt, where consumers were able to enjoy the low prices.

For a total of 661 hours this year, the net electricity price has been negative.

This is a new record.

The record was set on Sunday, when there were a total of 11 hours of negative electricity prices across the two electricity price areas east and west of the Great Belt, respectively. This is the third year in a row that a new record has been set for the number of hours with negative electricity prices.

- The cheapest forms of production in the energy system are renewable energy such as solar and wind, and as we have gained more and more of it in our energy system, the weather is becoming more important for the price of electricity. This year, among other things, we have had many hours of sunshine, which in June led to a new monthly record for negative electricity prices, while wind is now increasingly taking over and playing a role, says Mads Brøgger, director of Norlys' energy business.

In 2025, the West of the Great Belt experienced 411 hours with negative electricity prices, which is a new record for the area, while the East is still below last year's 275 hours with negative prices with 250 hours this year.

The price differences between the two electricity areas are due to Denmark's division into DK1 and DK2, where prices can vary significantly.
