US President Donald Trump is currently on a state visit to the UK. In this context, Donald Trump chose to encourage British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to exploit the North Sea's great potential when it comes to oil and gas resources. This is reported by Energy Voice.
In the same context, Donald Trump repeated his criticism of offshore wind, which he blamed for high energy prices. Keir Starmer made it clear at the press conference that Britain will also consist of both renewable and traditional energy sources in the future. In the same context, he emphasized that he was determined that energy prices must be lowered.
The Labour government has previously refused to initiate new oil and gas licenses in the North Sea, instead focusing more on offshore wind. As in the rest of Europe, however, a number of offshore wind projects have run into challenges both financially and in relation to supply chains, which led Ørsted to stop the development of the Hornsea 4 project. The Conservatives' new political leader, Kemi Badenoch, has on X given her support to Trump's proposal to focus on oil and gas rather than the development of offshore wind.
