Niels Fuglsang (S) has been appointed by the European Socialists as the lead negotiator on parts of the EU's legislative package that will ensure faster expansion of critical European energy infrastructure, such as electricity grids, wind turbines and solar cells.

"The EU is facing a huge task of becoming independent of other states, and this applies to the highest degree in connection with Europe's energy supply," he writes on his Facebook.

Among other things, he highlights that one of the biggest challenges for the expansion of the electricity grid is the very slow permit procedures. In Denmark, it can take up to nine years to obtain the necessary approvals for renewable energy projects, which is significantly longer than the average in the EU, where the process typically takes five years.

"It cannot be right that it is taking so long. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary that we examine our legislation thoroughly and correct it in the best possible way," he writes and continues:

"That is precisely the task that I face as the European Parliament's chief negotiator: to speed up the permit processes."

The legislative package, which Niels Fuglsang will lead through the European Parliament, was presented by EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen on December 10. An important part of the proposal is to centralize the planning of energy infrastructure at the European level, so that member states can exchange energy more efficiently. The goal is also to reduce Europe's dependence on imported energy, bring down energy prices and accelerate the green transition.
