Energinet is starting preparations for a new and more powerful electricity connection between Aarhus and Aabenraa with a series of dialogue meetings for citizens along the planned route. The state-owned company announced this in a statement.
Around 4,000 citizens have been invited to eight meetings in August and September, where the state-owned company will present proposals for the location of overhead lines, cables and high-voltage substations. The project is intended to significantly strengthen the capacity of the electricity grid and meet the increasing demand for electricity.
- It is important that we are told about the project and the background to why we are building new connections in the area. We know that most people would prefer to have our electricity lines on their land or in their local area. We would therefore like to meet the citizens and answer the many questions that people naturally have, says Søren Damsgaard Mikkelsen, project director at Energinet.
The new 400 kV connection will be approximately 190 km long and will have more than double the capacity of the existing one from the 1970s. In addition, 270 km of 150 kV cables will be laid underground as well as new high-voltage stations.
From August 25 to October 8, citizens can send their comments on the project. After this, Energinet will decide on any changes before the final route is presented in early 2026.
Only up to 30 km of the new 400 kV line can be buried. Energinet estimates that total cable laying will make the electricity system more unstable and increase the risk of errors.
- It is not technically feasible to build the entire connection as buried cables. It is extremely technically complicated to build and operate a cable connection at 400 kV level. Total cable laying would mean more errors and a more unstable electricity system, and it would affect the security of supply and the vulnerability of the entire electricity supply in Denmark, says Søren Damsgaard Mikkelsen.
The first new connections are expected to be in operation in 2032, and the last masts will be removed in 2036.
