Solar cell industry: Renewable energy agreement removes barriers – but roof surfaces are overlooked

The Danish Solar Cell Association praises the new political agreement for giving a boost to solar energy on land, but the industry association calls for better utilization of building roofs.

The government and a broad majority in the Danish Parliament have just entered into a new agreement that will boost the expansion of renewable energy on land. The agreement contains 21 initiatives, and several of them are positively received by the Danish Solar Cell Association – including the possibility of solar energy on low-lying soils and the sale of green electricity to neighbors. . The industry association writes in a statement.

The association highlights as a positive element that Friday's agreement reaffirms the ambition of a quadrupling of green electricity from renewable energy on land by 2030. However, they warn that the pace of expansion of solar power is still too slow, and that the focus must now be on rapid implementation and lower costs. At the same time, the association welcomes the strengthening of the renewable energy travel team and the speeding up of case processing.

However, according to the Danish Solar Cell Association, the agreement overlooks the potential of the large roof surfaces of, for example, companies and logistics centers. Here, far more solar capacity could be installed than is the case today.

- Unfortunately, we see that large roof surfaces – e.g. on companies and logistics centers – are still not properly considered in the RE expansion. These roof systems are often dimensioned small according to the building's own consumption, even though the large roof areas could be utilized much better as an asset in the energy system, explains Flemming V. Kristensen, chairman of the Danish Solar Cell Association.

According to the association, calculations show that over 10 GW of solar capacity can be installed on roofs alone – more than twice as much as the total current capacity of almost 5 GW. Therefore, the industry is calling for better framework conditions and changes in tariff structures that can make solar cells on buildings more attractive.

The agreement provides more funds to the pool for apartment building construction. It is a step in the right direction, it says, but the Danish Solar Cell Association emphasizes that the next important step is to ensure rapid and efficient utilization of suitable areas for solar energy – both on the ground and on roofs.
