The EU expects to mobilise over 400 billion euros by 2027 for investments in the Global Gateway. This is according to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

The Global Gateway is the EU's investment programme for the global south. It is an alternative to China's competing Belt and Road Initiative.

- Our original goal was to mobilise 300 billion euros in five years. But we have already reached that goal. In four years, we have mobilised more than 306 billion euros. I am convinced that we will surpass 400 billion by 2027, says von der Leyen.

The 400 billion euros corresponds to almost 3,000 billion kroner. The money is intended to bring the EU further in the race with China for influence in the global south, which is a term for countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Here, China has, among other things, gained access to critical raw materials with its Belt and Road Initiative.

The Global Gateway is the EU's response. The program is intended to strengthen both the economies and the "independence" of the EU and the countries of the global south, says von der Leyen.

- We want to work with you to focus the Global Gateway even more on key value chains. This is energy, this is green technology, digitalization, critical raw materials, transport and food. In all these areas, the goal is to unite our strength and build resilient value chains together, says von der Leyen.

According to von der Leyen, this should be done by the EU investing in "local infrastructure and local jobs" in countries in the global south.

DI calls for greater clarity

Danish Industry (DI) is in dialogue with African companies and partners who are demanding increased trade and investment in infrastructure, says Deputy Director Marie Gad.

- Global Gateway can meet this wish if it succeeds in translating the strategy's visions into reality, says Marie Gad.

However, she calls for greater clarity and a shorter process from idea to financing of a project being released.

- If it succeeds in creating European infrastructure projects driven by European companies, it not only contributes to strengthening the infrastructure locally, but also creates jobs and growth, says she.
