Democrats will force Republicans to read a 940-page tax and spending bill in the Senate. This is stated by the leader of the Democratic minority in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, in a post on the social media X. It is a large package of legislation that US President Donald Trump himself calls the "Big, Beautiful Bill".
- Republicans will not tell Americans what the bill says. So Democrats are forcing them to read it from start to finish in the Senate, writes Schumer.
- We will be here all night if that is what it takes to get it read.
Chuck Schumer further calls the bill the "Big, Ugly Bill".
- Republicans are moving forward with a radical bill of a thousand pages without knowing how many trillions (dollars, ed.) it will cost. This means higher costs for buying houses and cars, higher credit card bills and debt for future generations.
- Why? All to give tax breaks to the rich, he writes.
Criticized by Musk
The bill has been criticized from several fronts, including from the wealthy Elon Musk, who is Trump's former ally. Musk most recently expressed criticism on Sunday night on X, around the same time as Schumer's post. Musk writes, among other things, that it will destroy millions of jobs in the United States.
- Absolutely crazy and destructive. It gives a helping hand to the industries of the past, while causing serious damage to the industries of the future.
Musk headed Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) until he left the administration in May. From the beginning, Elon Musk was only supposed to be a part of Doge temporarily.
Removes incentives for renewable energy
In addition to tax cuts, Trump's legislative package will remove several of the incentives for renewable energy that were introduced under Trump's predecessor, Joe Biden.
The legislative package will phase out subsidies for wind and solar, for example, and replace them with subsidies for fossil fuels such as oil and gas.
It will also provide funding for measures against immigration. At the same time, it will make it more difficult for the poorest in the United States to access health and food programs.
Overall, it is considered to be of great importance for Trump to implement his political agenda.
