In 2030, offshore wind farms of three GW will supply electricity to Denmark, Sweden and Germany. The many turbines will supply energy to what will be the Bornholm Energy Island. With Bornholm Energy Island comes a lot of opportunities, and to exploit these opportunities, the Baltic Energy Island fund has been launched with the goal of making Bornholm the green hub in the Baltic Sea.

Baltic Energy Island is now receiving extra support for this task. Thus, in connection with the government's rural development initiative, 10 million DKK has been allocated as a grant to the fund, which is already financed by the EU's Regional Fund and the EU's Social Fund as part of the union's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the new money brings joy to one of the local members of parliament.

"When Bornholm allocates land for so much renewable energy, it must of course also be used to create development, jobs and educational opportunities. So we are showing a model for how renewable energy can also create local value. That is the goal for the whole country, writes Lea Wermelin, who is climate and energy spokesperson for the Social Democrats, on her LinkedIn profile.
