RINGKØBING-SKJERN: Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality is Denmark's largest measured in area – and also Denmark's largest measured in renewable energy capacity. Despite the fact that the West Jutland municipality is already at the forefront when it comes to green energy projects, there is a demand among renewable energy developers for space for new energy plants.
However, it has not been clear how great the demand actually is. That is why the city council launched an application round last year, where developers were required to submit or resubmit their potential projects by March 1st if they wanted to ensure that they were considered for areas in the municipality.
That deadline was later postponed to May 1st. And by the deadline, 12 project developers and private landowners had now submitted a total of 26 applications to the municipality. The municipality informs in a press release.
The applications are divided into three applications for the installation of wind turbines, eight applications for the installation of both wind turbines and solar cells in the same area and 15 applications for the installation of solar cells in an area. In addition, an application has been made for the establishment of a power-to-X plant, and the municipality has also received an expression of interest for wind turbines without a project.
- The number of project applications tells me that there is a great interest in the green transition among both project developers and many local landowners. This speaks to the municipality's climate ambitions, but having said that, I would like to remind you that not one of the projects has been adopted yet. The political process is only just getting started, says Mayor Hans Østergaard (V).
The applicant that has applied for the most projects is GreenGo. The developer has submitted a total of nine applications to the municipality. However, the projects are all sub-projects in the giant energy park project "Megaton", which together will constitute a four GW hybrid solar and wind energy park, which, in conjunction with PtX, has the ambition to produce one million tons of green fuels annually by 2030 at the latest.
In the coming weeks, the administration will register the applications received, including in relation to whether the projects meet the city council's wishes regarding, for example, opportunities for multifunctionality, i.e. whether, for example, solar cell projects are intended to be located on low-lying soil, which for reasons of both climate and environment must nevertheless be removed from ordinary agricultural operations. Later, the city council will take a closer look at the applications, and citizens will also be involved, as a public information and dialogue meeting about the projects will be held, among other things.
