Huge energy park worth 60 billion DKK on the way in Ringkøbing-Skjern

The developer GreenGo Energy and Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality have entered into a collaboration on the 'Megaton' project, which will produce one million tons of green fuels annually by 2030 at the latest.

RINGKØBING-SKJERN: Denmark's and one of the world's largest energy parks may be on the way in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality. In any case, GreenGo Energy and the municipality have launched a collaboration to develop a green energy park based on four GW of renewable hybrid solar and wind energy, which will be established directly to a new energy park, the core of which will be two GW of electrolysis.

The energy park will be established at the upcoming Stovstrup 400kV transformer station east of Tarm. This is stated by the parties in a press release.

The goal of the project, which goes by the name 'Megaton', is a production of over one million tons of green fuels annually. The hope is that the project can become a new landmark for Denmark and help position Denmark as a pioneer in the PtX industry. The ambition is that the energy park and the fully integrated renewable energy projects will be in operation before 2030.

- This is without comparison the most ambitious and promising project that we as a city council have been presented with. As Denmark's climate municipality no. 1, we have been at the forefront of the fight for the climate for many years. Now we have the opportunity to be at the forefront again. That is why I am also excited that GreenGo Energy sees an opportunity to implement a project of this caliber in Ringkøbing-Skjern, says Mayor Hans Østergaard (V).

Costs 60 billion DKK.

However, for the project to be implemented, it requires massive investments. The total investment in the Megaton project is expected to be around DKK 60 billion. The investment will come from GreenGo Energy's customers and partners.

- With the Megaton project and the development of one of the world's largest energy parks in West Jutland, we will once again put Denmark on the world map as a leader in the transition to 100 percent green electricity and the green fuels that are absolutely necessary to achieve the global climate goals towards 2050, says Karsten Nielsen, CEO of GreenGo Energy, and continues:

- We are pleased that the city council of Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality is just as ambitious about the green transition as GreenGo Energy.

The green business organization Green Power Denmark also sees great prospects in the Megaton project and praises Ringkøbing-Skjern for accepting the project.

- This project is big in every way. GreenGo Energy should be highly commended for making the green investment and, together with Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality, for showing the way for how to work together effectively and with local support to establish green energy projects. There is a lot to learn from the project, and I hope that other municipalities will be inspired, says Kristian Jensen, CEO of Green Power Denmark.

Carefully selected location

A crucial prerequisite for competitive PtX projects on a large scale is control over renewable energy in the necessary quantities and with the right pricing. It is also crucial that the renewable energy production covers the entire year,

The starting point and prerequisite for Megaton is GreenGo Energy's development portfolio of 4,000 hectares of onshore solar and wind projects in the municipality and two GW of offshore wind, which are taken from GreenGo Energy's development portfolio of offshore wind projects, which have primarily been applied for under the open door scheme. The final locations for the energy-producing assets have not yet been determined, but will be qualified in the coming period in collaboration with Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality and local stakeholders.

The four GW solar and wind projects will produce 11.5 TWh of green electricity annually - this corresponds to more than 30 percent of Denmark's current total electricity consumption. More than 85 percent is expected to be used directly in the Energy Park in the production of green fuels.

GreenGo Energy has long worked closely with landowners and neighbors of the 350-hectare land area that borders the future Stovstrup 400kV transformer station east of Tarm - areas that the municipality has already designated for energy-intensive industries such as PtX. A location at one of the country's largest transformer stations is seen as strategically important.

- The location at the Stovstrup transformer is ideal as an existing hub for electricity transmission with the 400kV expansion, but also in light of the planned hydrogen pipeline to Europe, which is under development and planned to be established by 2030, says Anders Heine Jensen, Director of P2X and Offshore Wind at GreenGo Energy.

GreenGo Energy was established in 2011 and today has more than 14 GW of renewable energy and P2X projects in various stages of development and construction in several US states and in Northern Europe.
