It all started with a statement from a former local chairman of the Liberal Party, Tage Møller. According to Dagbladet Ringkøbing-Skjern, he called for the expansion of the Megaton project to be put on hold due to lack of citizen support until after the upcoming municipal election in 2025.

A pause is something that the group chairman of the SF's three council members in Ringkøbing-Skjern supports, writes the same newspaper. more.

- We need to get some experts to look at the Megaton project. There are so many unresolved questions in connection with Power-to-X that I think we need to know something about. Ringkøbing-Skjern is not going to save the whole world with a green transition. It is crucial for me that we do not rush through the energy plants, says SF group chairman Niels Rasmussen.

Mayor rejects break

But Mayor Hans Østergaard (V) sees no reason to postpone the prestige project Megaton. It is something he has support for in the Liberal Party city council group, which counts 11 out of 29 members.

- We have actually made a lot of effort to involve citizens early on. The requirement for information meetings, where project developers present the projects before they send an application to the municipality, is an example of this. It is precisely about involving the citizens before the decisions are made. I am sorry that we have not succeeded in communicating that intention, says Hans Østergaard, who adds, however, that most decisions will be made by the city council after the next municipal election.

The Megaton project is planned to include a four GW PtX factory, 4,000 hectares of solar cells, 30 onshore turbines and 130 offshore turbines.
