If the EU countries can reach an agreement on an updated EU climate law with a 2040 climate target, it will set the direction for both the climate and future investments in the EU. This is what Climate and Energy Minister Lars Aagaard (M) says.

The announcement comes ahead of a ministerial meeting in Brussels on Tuesday. Here, Lars Aagaard will chair a crucial meeting that could end with the EU setting a new 2040 target for greenhouse gas reductions.

- The Danish EU presidency has delivered a compromise text. Now we will see during the day whether the will to reach a compromise is present in the room, says Lars Aagaard.

Despite lengthy negotiations between the EU countries, it is still open before the meeting whether they will succeed in reaching the goal. However, this is the expectation after the EU heads of state and government at the EU summit at the end of October gave their guidance on how they want the matter to be resolved. Since then, the Danish EU Presidency has been conducting intense negotiations to achieve the 2040 target.

The EU Commission has proposed that it should be a 90 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels.

Based on the 2040 climate target, the Danish EU Presidency hopes to gather support for a 2035 target, which will be the EU's message to COP30 in Brazil.
