38 percent more biogas in 10 years

Stable biogas production ensures security of supply in Denmark with a higher share of biogas.

The share of biogas in Denmark has grown significantly over the past ten years and in 2024 accounted for 38 percent of the total distributed gas volume. At the same time, production is even throughout the year, which supports security of supply. This is stated by Evida in a press release.

Evida has connected a total of 57 biogas plants to the gas grid, the first of which was connected in 2014. In 2024, 649 million Nm3 of biogas was delivered to the distribution system, which is an increase of 1 percent compared to 2023. At the same time, the share decreased slightly from 38.7 percent in 2023 to 38.0 percent in 2024 due to increasing total gas consumption, primarily driven by business customers.

- The decrease in the share should be seen in light of the fact that total gas consumption increased by 3 percent. in 2024. However, new plants are on the way, and we therefore expect that the share of biogas will increase in the coming years, says Sune Holm, COO of Evida.

Production is stable throughout the year, unlike other renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. On July 20, 2024, the share of biogas was 100.6 percent, which was the highest recorded share.

- In 2024, biogas production accounted for over 20 percent of the total production of renewable energy in Denmark. It is important to have stable energy sources in the green transition, and therefore it is also positive that we have connected 57 plants since 2014, and that more are on the way, says the COO.

2024 marked the decade of the first biogas plant in Denmark. Six new plants are being established, which will contribute to the green transition.

-Evida works together with Energinet and biogas producers every day for the green transition of the methane gas system. It is a Danish success story that in ten years we have a share of biogas of just under 40 percent, says Sune Holm.

Biogas production also has a positive climate effect. According to Evida, a simple calculation method means that each Nm3 of biogas that replaces one Nm3 of natural gas displaces 2.26 kg of CO2. The production of biogas in 2024 has thus reduced CO2 emissions by approximately 1.47 million t.
